The Pearce lab has a general interest in genetically inherited diseases of children. More specifically our goal is to contribute to the understanding of the molecular basis of several pediatric neurodegenerative diseases. Batten Disease The disease that is our primary focus is Batten disease. Batten disease is a type of Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis, so called because of the fact that a part of the cell called the lysosome accumulates a heterogeneous mix of fat like material called lipofuscin. Many other diseases that result in brain degenerative diseases in children result from accumulation of other biological compounds in the lysosome. These are collectively termed Lysosomal Storage Disorders. Position Summary: Under general direction of the Principal Investigator. Performs non complex to moderately complex laboratory testing, experiments and analyses following established protocols. Daily administrative responsibilities of the lab. Participates in the development of protocols, revisions, amendments and monitor plan .and. scope. Maintains records of research. Compile and analyze data. Make figures and graphs to represent data. Presents results to research group. Responsible for regulatory record keeping and training. Must coordinate and supervise use of research center shared equipment and facilities including generation of Standard Operating Procedures when required. Mediation resolution of conflicts between labs over shared equipment and facilities are required. Supervises maintenance and servicing of research center shared equipment and facilities. Participates in regular meetings with Research Operations Manager and other senior technical staff from other research centers to resolve issues related to purchasing, lab infrastructure, facility status, lab office logistical functions, and intra research center cooperation. Management of shared research center space to accommodate needs of all labs. Required to serve as a representative of research center interests and needs on multi research center committees, panels and groups. Supervise lab staff and or undergraduate students such as animal experimentation and use. Provide training to lab staff on techniques. Gives input to performance appraisals, interviewing, hiring, firing. Must possess ability to implement experiments in the subject discipline with the ability to trouble shoot issues. Good knowledge of the principles and techniques of the subject discipline required. Maintain equipment and supply inventory. Possesses ability to run complex pieces of equipment requiring advanced specialized training. Must possess knowledge of modern research methods, data collection and analysis. Must have significant experience in analyzing and evaluating data. Ability to work collaboratively with a research group or team. Required Skills Bachelor s degree in a clinical, health, or life science field required. Prefer Master s degree. Four or more years of related experience preferred. Management experience is highly recommended.
