Laboratory Technical Director Department: Laboratory-Clinical Schedule: Full-Time Shift: Day shift Hours: 40 hrs Salary: * Job Details: ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Graduate of a recognized School of Medical Technology and currently registered as a Medical Technologist - MT(ASCP) or CLS. Masters degree preferred. Maintains current registration with the American Society for Clinical Pathology and/or equivalent accrediting agency. Minimum of five years working experience as a medical technologist with demonstrated proficiency in major areas of a clinical laboratory. Minimum of two years working experience as a laboratory supervisor, chief technologist, associate director or other laboratory position requiring supervisory-managerial skills. Previous experience in the management of clinical laboratory of an acute care hospital. Understanding of information systems relative to inpatient, outpatient and ambulatory network laboratory processes and conductivity Must have experience with regulatory and accreditation of laboratory operations, preferably CLIA, CAP, and AABB. Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions • Work is performed during regular work hours, but will require evening and/or weekend hours to meet deadlines. • Work in well lighted and clean surroundings. • Work under extreme pressures. • Position requires sitting for approximately 4-6 hours per day and walking for 2 hours per day. • Position requires light to moderate work with 50 pounds maximum weight to lift and carry. • Position requires reaching, bending, stooping, and handling objects with hands and/or fingers, talking and/or hearing, and seeing. • The employee is expected to adhere to all agency policies and to act as a role model in adherence to agency policies. Organization Under direction of the Medical Director of Laboratories but may receive assistance, direction and consultation from any of the staff pathologists. Receives general supervision from Medical Director in manners concerning budgetary development and/or expenditure and control. Supervises the work and activities of laboratory personnel classified as Senior Medical Technologist, Medical Technologist, Certified Laboratory Assistance, Laboratory Technician, Histotechnician, Cytotechnician, Aide, Department Secretary, Medical Transcriptionist, Registration Clerk. Has working contact with administration and all department heads and supervisors particularly nursing, business office, personnel, purchasing, housekeeping and maintenance. Has contact with outside organizations concerned with laboratory activities and various professional organizations. Has some patient contact. Has a broad managerial responsibility for planning, coordination and control of all component sections of the laboratory. Has broad managerial responsibility for administration of School of Medical Technology. AGE OF PATIENTS SERVED Cares for patients in the age category(s) : all ages PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Primary responsibility includes planning, organizing and directing the overall operation of the Laboratory Department. Activities included are performance of chemical, microscopic and bacteriologic tests performed in the laboratory to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Ensure that services are of the best quality, are cost contained and are carried out in an expeditious manner. Additional responsibilities includes recognizing results or problems that require referral to the Pathologist, assuring competency of all personnel, formulating the budget for the department, maintaining performance improvement activities within the department and participating in CQI/Lean activities and maintaining efficient and effective departmental operations in compliance with all state, federal, and local regulatory laws, standards and protocols. SPECIFIC DUTIES 1. Work with hospital administration on planning, organizing and directing laboratory operations and ensuring compliance with all local, state and federal regulations. 4. Make daily rounds in Laboratory to judge effectiveness of operation, utilization of personnel and supplies, and general ethical and professional atmosphere. 5. Secure and maintain the physical facilities, equipment and supplies which are required to carry out effective patient care and create an optimum physical environment. 6. Responsible for the laboratory information systems and interfaces with the hospital s clinical information systems. 7. Initiate and actuate improved methods of services and direct their implementation. 8. Prepare department budgets for personnel, operating expenses and capital equipment. 9. Responsible for the fiscal operation of the department. 10. Communicate appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff and administration. 11. Interact professionally with patient/family. 12. Consult other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities. 13. Establish and maintain standards of performance and ensures competency and appropriate licensure of personnel. 14. Direct and participate in the human resource management function for the department by coordinating the selection, promotion, orientation and performance appraisal processes. 15. Ensure that the quality control and quality assurance programs are established and maintained to assure the quality of laboratory services provided and to identify failures in quality as they occur.
