Title: Research Associate, Trait Discovery Location: US-CO-Fort Collins Job Number: FOR00410 Cargill Specialty Seeds & Oils develops, produces and markets high-performance specialty oils. Our business is backed by an intellectual property position in the genetic engineering of canola and oil seeds. We develop proprietary planting seeds commercialize specialty oils to food industry. Position Purpose The purpose of this position is to isolate, create, and analyze material for target traits in canola using molecular biology, chemistry and genetics tools inArabidopsisandBrassica napus. Target traits include manipulation of plant lipid metabolism, improvement in disease resistance, and other agronomic characteristics. This position independently designs and performs experiments aligned with new product development within the business strategy. Requires working knowledge of analysis of DNA, RNA, and Mendelian genetics to analyze contribution of genes/gene families to traits of interest. Works with supervisor to develop research plans, budgets and timelines, and works with cross-functional teams to achieve objectives. Principal Accountabilities 70% Identify sequences to support genetic marker development, and design assays to understand gene targets; design and execute molecular, genetic and analytical experiments to determine gene function and contribution to trait of interest 10% Design and construct plasmids containing relevant gene targets and evaluate in transgenicBrassicaandArabidopsisplant material 10% Maintain laboratory notebook, actively participate in Safety Program, perform job-related duties including ordering and reconciliation 10% Supervision of direct reports including coaching, development, prioritization of projects, and performance management Qualifications: Required: * B.S. in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or related field plus 4 years relevant experience (such as molecular genetics and/or chemistry) in a laboratory setting OR M.S. in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or related field plus 2 years relevant experience in a laboratory setting * Experience and application of molecular biology tools: isolation of DNA, use of PCR, plasmid construction, DNA sequence analysis * Documented ability to design, carry out, and report (independently and in collaboration with other members of project teams) experiments, results, and conclusions * Experience working in a team setting with internal and external collaborators * Demonstrated ability to work within safety guidelines Preferred: * M.S. in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology plus 5 years relevant experience in a laboratory setting * Experience in evaluation of traits inArabidopsis thalianaand familiarity with genetic tools available * Familiarity with plant breeding, genetics, and physiology ofBrassicaandArabidopsis * Working knowledge of computers and sequence analysis software packages * Demonstrated ability to innovate and lead/participate as a member of a multidisciplinary team * Knowledge in plant lipid metabolism and fatty acid biosynthesis * Working knowledge of chemical analysis techniques Job: Research and Development Cargill is an EEO/AA employer.
