Title: Research Associate, Molecular Breeding Location: US-CO-Fort Collins Job Number: FOR00409 Cargill Specialty Seeds & Oils develops, produces and markets high-performance specialty oils. Our business is backed by an intellectual property position in the genetic engineering of canola and oil seeds. We develop proprietary planting seeds commercialize specialty oils to food industry. Position Purpose This position requires an individual with experience in plant molecular genetics and genomics to execute specialty trait upload and development of canola hybrid parent lines. Individual is responsible for data analysis, planning and completion of activities necessary to meet established milestones and timelines for specialty trait upload and parent line development. Individual will work closely with cross-functional team in executing the upload and development strategy to support seed and oil customer needs. Target specialty traits include manipulation of plant lipid metabolism, improvement in disease resistance, and other agronomic characters. Requires working knowledge of DNA, RNA, and Mendelian genetics analysis to elucidate relationships between molecular markers and traits of interest. Principal Accountabilities 55% Completes necessary documentation (Project Request Form, crossing lists, etc.) and plans activities to execute the introgression and parent line development strategy for incorporating target traits into hybrid parent lines; collaborates closely with the Developmental Breeding, Plant Management and Germplasm Screening teams to execute and continually improve the marker selection process; analyzes and interprets molecular marker data to make selections for population advancement 25% Maintains accurate records using ELN, generates summary reports and communicates progress and recommendations for strategy improvement to managers for trait upload and trait stability projects; works with supervisor to execute projects and prioritize commercial and developmental activities 20% As a project owner, provide work direction and work side by side with greenhouse team to execute projects, execute SOP’s and improve processes Qualifications: Required: * B.S. in Plant Biology, Plant Breeding or Plant Physiology or related field plus 4 years relevant experience (genetics / molecular markers) OR M.S. in Plant Biology, Plant Breeding or Plant Physiology or related field plus 4 years relevant experience * Awareness of plant genetics, genomics and genetic marker technologies including RFLP, RAPD, SSR, and SNP * Awareness of hybrid plant breeding methodologies including genomic selection * Documented ability to plan, execute, and report (independently and in collaboration with other members of project teams) experiments, results, and conclusions * Ability to work within Cargill safety guidelines Preferred: * M.S. in Plant Genetics or Plant Breeding plus 5 years relevant experience * Experience in hybrid plant breeding methodologies including genomic selection * Awareness of plant lipid metabolism and fatty acid biosynthesis * Awareness of angiosperm polyploidy, particularly in the genomic architecture of the Brassica species * Experience in plant pathology * Experience managing objectives with diverse teams through effective coaching and development * Knowledge of Intellectual Property evaluation and capture * Proven effective collaboration within team and among departments * Publications in peer-reviewed journals * Demonstrated behaviors consistent with the Cargill Leadership Model Job: Research and Development Cargill is an EEO/AA employer.
