(USA-NC-Research Triangle Park) Staff Engineer, Genomic Sciences
**_JOB SUMMARY_:** We are looking for an exceptional Staff Engineer to join our rapidly growing genomic sciences R&D; team. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, the Staff Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing and constructing prototype instrumentation for streamlining clinical laboratory workflow. To carry out these duties, the Staff Engineer will interact directly with our partners in clinical laboratories and BD Technologies leadership to leverage BD core competencies to affect increased throughput and reliability of preparing samples for next generation sequence analysis. The staff engineer will work in close collaboration with assay development, hardware design, software, and other functional groups to insure successful operation of novel work flow instrumentation. The Genomic Sciences role will be responsible for determining and ensuring comprehensive system integration of electromechanical devices for automated in vitro diagnostic tests. The position will collaborate closely with peers in mechanical and electrical engineering and software development. **_DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES_:** * Work with collaborator to clearly delineate clinical workflow and identify opportunities to improve reliability, decrease manual interventions and decrease turnaround time. * Design, construct and test breadboard prototypes to automate aspects of clinical NGS workflow**** * Prioritize tasks to ensure completion of projects under challenging timelines. * Contributes to product conceptualization and develops work plans to reduce concept to design * Responsible for management of product requirements and high-level design specifications including integration plans of modules and components into a complete system * Serve as technical lead in collaboration with external partners**** * Acts independently within team expectations, provides guidance and work assignments to less experienced team members. * Work with business unit to ensure prototype instruments adhere to principles of manufacturability * Accountable for generating development schedule for integration activity on instrumented systems * Develop and maintain an understanding of the full breadth of platforms available in the clinical and non-clinical diagnostic industries. **KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:** * Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills are essential * Familiarity with diagnostic instrumentation such as liquid handlers, EIA analyzers, blood chemistry analyzers and incubation systems * Experience with requirement and specification management for FDA regulated products preferred * Specific experience with Next Generation Sequencing and associate workflows is preferred * Working knowledge of design for six sigma preferred * Experience as member of project teams preferred **EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:** * A BSME, BSEE, or closely related discipline plus 8 years’ instrument development experience or a MSME, MSEE, or closely related discipline plus 6 years instrument development experience. * A minimum of 1 year _in vitro_ diagnostic development experience. * A minimum of 2 years analytical molecular biology technique experience. * A minimum of 2 years successful lab automation and/or medical device equipment experience. * A minimum of 2 years of automation, data acquisition, and/or statistical methods experience. *Job:* Research & Development *Primary Location:* US-North Carolina-Research Triangle Park *Shift:* First Shift / Day Job *Req ID:* RES10060
