Application Review Date The First Review Date for this job is: Feb. 28, 2014 Departmental Overview The Department of Art Practice is an applied research and teaching unit in the College of Letters and Science, Division of Arts and Humanities. It is comprised of 6 FTE ladder faculty, 10-15 Unit 18 Lecturers, 9 career staff, 2-4 casual employees, 14 graduate students, 800 undergraduates (110 majors) and an active Alumni Group. In addition, the department hosts a number of visiting artists each year. Art Practice operates three specialized facilities: Kroeber Hall which houses the Wood and Metal Sculpture Instructional Shops, Printmaking Instructional Studio, Digital Media Labs, Painting Instructional Studios, Drawing Instructional Studios, the Garron Reading Room, the department’s Prop Collection, faculty studios and offices, administrative offices, and the Worth Ryder Art Gallery; Wurster Hall which houses the Ceramic Instructional Studio, undergraduate Honors’ Studios, and 2 graduate student studios; the UC Berkeley Richmond Bay Campus which houses 14 graduate student studios. The Department is relatively small in terms of faculty FTE, but its programs, functions, facilities, and resources are varied and complex. The Department of Art Practice is seeking a Gallery Director for the Worth Ryder Art Gallery. We seek a dynamic, thoughtful, adaptable individual with curator skills and communications savvy who enjoys an academic research-working environment. NOTE: This is a 20 hr/week appointment. Responsibilities Under the direction of the department manager and the indirect supervision of the Faculty advisor, the Gallery Director will develop, install, and curate a diverse range of exhibitions that address pedagogical issues relating to artistic production and display. These exhibitions range from undergraduate and graduate exhibitions to faculty and, by special invitation, contemporary artists’ shows. This job entails: setting up, taking down exhibits, and all related duties including maintenance such as ensuring that all walls are repaired (i.e., patching holes, painting, etc.), and arranging with custodial service to have floors waxed at the end of the academic year. In consultation with Art Practice faculty, schedule and oversee a diverse array of lectures by artists working with a variety of media and subject matter. In addition, the Gallery Director will arrange co-sponsorships (with other departments, programs, and units on campus) for some of these artist talks; select and supervise approximately 5-10 student interns per semester, which includes but not limited to, setting up and managing interns daily schedules and providing end-of -semester grades for each intern. Maintain and update gallery Facebook account, web page on department web site, and other social media accounts; Produce publicity for Gallery exhibits and Lecture Series (i.e., email invitations, campus event page, department web site, postcard mailings, etc.). Represent the Gallery at scholarly, public, and cultivation events in order to build bridges between the gallery and other campus units and arts throughout the Bay Area. Required Qualifications • Advance knowledge of standard museum curatorial practices. • Knowledge of the global contemporary art world • Knowledge of selection, evaluation, and exhibition of objects • Skills in assisting department with donor cultivation and relationship building • Skills in research and writing scholarly publications, grants, and public announcements • Skills in website maintenance • Ability to design and distribute publicity for exhibitions • Knowledge and ability in coordinating Visiting Artist Lecture Series • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication • Experience mentoring and overseeing interns • Demonstrated ability to provide hands on assistance with all gallery related matters. Preferred Qualifications M.A., M.F.A. and/or equivalent experience/training Salary & Benefits Full time salary range minimum is $57,000; salary will be prorated to reflect part-time appointment.
